On a side note and i might catch heat for this one..ob4cl pt.2 was a solid album one that I felt but wanted to feel waaay more..mainly because I grew up on the purple tape..and with that being said I took that knowledge and applied it to things other than the drug game..and i would have like to seen the story line of ob4cl follow suit growth wise..at 40 plus with guns on the block is a bad look..word..

I feel you on a few things good brother. The supply and demand issue will always be a riddle for the business man. To successfully bridge both gaps requires in my opinion know the mode of the people. They say that without the streets you cant get to the mainstream or that the streets is the foundation speaking of hip hop but its more than that for me. Too often rappers/mc's look at the streets as only the brothers/sisters in the hood but to me the streets are the "everyman/woman" encompassing all races. To have a feel for the mood of the people isnt easy especially for established artists because fame without humility tends to create detachment. There are a gang of artists out there with new voices that will not be heard because they isolate themselves from the everyman and to your point only speak for themselves and their crew. Taking Jay Elec into consideration I believe that without being embrassed by certain mainstream individuals he would have been lost in that catagory. However once you get the co-sign from a reputable source I believe it does two things. Creates the fan bandwagon effect which gives fame by association, Secondly people feel "permission" to let it be publically known that they feel an artist that the majority considers "underground", "backpackish" etc. You can't tell me that DJ's who grew up in the golden era werent up on Jay Elect before he was broke by the heavy hitters *cmon son*. My two cents. The laws of supply and demand will always be the essence of business but in our game those rules are tainted due to a abundance of factors but the main one in my opinion is lack of ownership (media outlets) and support (people who claim they want something realer)...Please forgive any typos/run-on's I was freestyling this...

Awesome article! I like it, I like it. Cedric, you have a vast knowledge of hip hop. I think you might be interested in an old article I wrote. I kind of wrote it in response to Sasha Frere Jones's notorious Hip Hop is Dead piece
